The Anita Shapolsky Gallery proudly presents "Salon Du Papier"; an intimate showcase of abstract expressionism on paper.
Featuring over 50 paper pieces by acclaimed mid 20th-century avant-garde artists, the versatility of the medium is contextualized through the philosophies, ideologies, and perceptions which motivated their work. Through this juxtaposition of ideals, viewers are challenged to form their own dialectics with and between some of the leading figures in abstract expressionism.
This discussion may consider how the pursuit of the ‘childlike’ forms of Karel Appel counterbalances Ilya Bolotowsky’s desire for philosophical order. Or one might reflect on how various artists manipulate such a personal medium, one as easily discarded as gifted, used to sketch or perfect.
Such an exhibition also allows for the viewing of oft reserved works by prolific artists such as the colorist Amaranth Ehrenhalt whose oeuvre stretches into all mediums. Her balanced use of vibrant colors creates a fiery harmony of energies, distinct on any wall, priceless to whom her art speaks.
With the work of more than 20 artists on display, "Salon Du Papier" encourages a fresh perspective of significant artists, by not only emphasizing contrasting elements but by showcasing the often neglected paper pieces that deserve a place on the wall.
