Thomas Nonn

Nonn came to the US from Hungary in 1957, after the repression of the uprising there in 1956. Coming from a world of State enforced social realism, he enthusiastically embraced the incredible spirit of freedom which characterized the NY scene. His works can be best described as "Matter Paintings", he explores surfaces of different materials exposed to various kinds of destructive forces. The materials are mixtures of sand, marble, oxidized copper and powdered pigments that are all prepared by himself. The collages resemble aesthetic transience of earthy elements.
