Gandy Brodie participated in the American abstract expressionist movement as an artist and art teacher. Born in New York City, he was exposed to many artists like Van Gogh, Klee, and Picasso in the city's various museums and was inspired to pursue a career in the arts because of them.

Brodie exhibited his portraits, landscapes and still lives widely and has works in many museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
